Tree Root Destroys Pipe and Causes Water Damage in Pembroke Pines Home?

4/9/2024 (Permalink)

A tree root has grown in and around a plumbing pipe. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in Broward County.

Our local Pembroke Pines and West Miramar teams are trusted leaders in water damage restoration services. Tree roots can significantly threaten underground plumbing pipes, because as trees grow, their roots naturally seek out sources of moisture, including underground pipes carrying water. Here are some examples of how tree roots can damage plumbing pipes:

Root Penetration: Tree roots can extend long distances underground and exert significant pressure on surrounding objects, including pipes. When roots encounter a crack or gap in a pipe joint, they can infiltrate the pipe in search of water. Once inside, the roots continue to grow and expand, gradually obstructing the water flow and causing further damage to the pipe.

Pipe Blockage: As tree roots grow inside the pipe, they can create blockages that restrict or completely block the water flow. This can lead to backups and overflows within the plumbing system, causing water to back up into sinks, toilets, or floor drains in the home.

Pipe Collapse: In severe cases, tree roots can cause enough damage to a pipe to result in partial or complete collapse. When a pipe collapses, water flow is completely obstructed, leading to significant water damage inside the home. The collapsed pipe may also require extensive repairs or replacement, adding to the cost and inconvenience for homeowners.

Plumbing Failure in Pembroke Pines Homes Causes Water Damage Emergency?

12/27/2023 (Permalink)

Water floods the floor of a home. We respond to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Broward County.

When a pipe breaks and floods your home in the middle of the night, our local Pembroke Pines and West Miramar teams are ready to respond to your call for help. Pipes can fail for many reasons, and the lifespan of plumbing systems depends on various factors, including materials, installation quality, maintenance, and environmental conditions. Some types of plumbing systems tend to last longer than others due to these factors.

Material Selection: Plumbing systems made of durable materials like copper, brass, or PEX tend to have longer lifespans compared to materials prone to corrosion or wear, such as galvanized steel or older iron pipes.

Installation Quality: Proper installation by skilled professionals ensures that pipes, fittings, and fixtures are connected correctly, reducing the risk of leaks or other issues that can shorten the system's lifespan.

Maintenance: Regular maintenance, including inspections, cleaning, and addressing minor issues promptly, can extend the life of a plumbing system. Neglecting maintenance can lead to premature deterioration.

Water Quality: The quality of the water supply can affect the longevity of plumbing systems. Water with high mineral content or acidity can accelerate corrosion and damage pipes and fixtures.

Environmental Conditions: Extreme temperatures, freezing, or exposure to harsh chemicals can also impact the lifespan of plumbing components.

Overnight Pipe Break Floods Southwest Ranches Home?

11/14/2023 (Permalink)

Water gushes out of a broken pipe. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Southwest Ranches.

The house sitter had no idea where the water shut-off valve was located in our home in Southwest Ranches, so when a pipe burst in the middle of the night, our house was flooded. Our insurance adjuster told us to call the local SERVPRO of Pembroke Pines / West Miramar team and they sent a team out right away. If only I had the foresight to show the house sitter where the main water shut-off valve was, we could have avoided much of the damage.

Here is some information on locating and closing the main water shut-off valve:

Start by locating the main shut-off valve. The main cut-off valves are usually outdoors in warmer climates, and in colder climates, these valves are usually indoors. The water shut-off valves have either round wheel or lever handles.

It is important to note that if a valve is difficult to turn – DO NOT force it. Call a licensed plumber or the local public works authority for assistance.

  • Round wheel handle valves will turn off by turning the handle to the right (clockwise). A few turns should stop the wheel.
  • Handle valves should slowly be turned clockwise ¼ turn. The handle should no longer be parallel with the pipe. It should stop at a ¼ turn.

Leaking Air Conditioner Cause of Water Damage in Pembroke Pines Business?

8/29/2023 (Permalink)

A commercial air conditioning unit is mounted to the exterior wall of a commercial property. We restore commercial water damage 24 hours a day in Broward County.

Our local Pembroke Pines and West Miramar teams are trusted leaders in commercial water damage restoration. Water intrusion from damaged drainage pipes is a common cause of water damage. Wall-mounted air conditioning units can allow water to enter a structure if the pipes are clogged, cracked, or installed incorrectly.

Here are some tips from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety for protecting your business from heavy rain:

Check wall air conditioners

If your property uses wall air conditioners:

  • Ensure the size of the internal drain pipe is adequate and water is flowing freely
  • Ensure there is proper caulking and weather stripping around the unit
  • Ensure the unit is installed with a 1/4-inch bubble tilt toward the outside

Check air conditioner drains

Check for long-term standing water in gutters and correct any blockages. If there are no blockages, but standing water still occurs, ensure the gutter is properly sloped to the downspout.

Check drainage downspouts

Ensure downspouts funnel water away from the building and do not allow water to accumulate near the building’s perimeter.

Up-size gutters

When replacing gutters, consider larger-sized gutters which allow for greater flow.

Roof Damaged by Clogged Rain Gutters in Pembroke Pines?

4/25/2023 (Permalink)

A person is using a pressure washer to clear debris from a rain gutter. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Broward County!

Our Pembroke Pines and West Miramar team responds to storm and water damage emergencies 24 hours a day. After it rains, it is a good idea to inspect your rain gutters for signs of water damage. Here are some tips from expert Bob Villa for determining if your rain gutters are damaged:

Inspect your rain gutters for visible signs of cracking. Use binoculars to inspect for smaller cracks. If you see extensive cracking, replacement is required.

Inspect gutter seams for damage where two horizontal sections meet.

Inspect your home’s paint job. If there is evidence of paint peeling, it may point to rain gutter failure. Check the section of the rain gutter closest to the paint damage for leaks. If there are more than a couple of leaks, you may want to replace the rain gutters.

Inspect your home’s exterior wood elements for rotting windowsills or door jambs. You may have clogged rain gutters or inadequate storm drainage.

Inspect the exterior of the home for mildew damage. If there is moisture accumulating around or near the foundation, mildew can grow. This is a sign your rain gutters are not working properly.

Can a Swimming Pool Leak Damage My Home’s Foundation in Miramar?

8/30/2022 (Permalink)

A swimming pool in a backyard is shown. We are leaders in water damage restoration in Broward County.

Our team in Pembroke Pines and West Miramar responds to water damage emergencies in Miramar every year. A leaking swimming pool can weaken your pool and the foundation of your home. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that a leaking pool can waste thousands of gallons of water each month. Here are the steps you can take to determine if your pool is leaking:

  • Grab a clear container and a marker
  • During the test period, turn off the pool auto-fill, do not manually add water to the pool, and avoid splashing water out of the pool
  • Put the container on the pool steps and mark the water level on the outside of the container
  • Now, fill the container with pool water up to the mark you just made so the levels match
  • Mark the water level inside the container
  • Now, wait and give evaporation time to work, usually two to three days. You’ll have to perform the test again if it rains or is windy.
  • Place the container on the pool steps. If the water in the pool is lower than the water in the container, you have a leak
  • If both the pool level and the container water levels are the same, you do not have a leak

Leaking Sprinkler System in Pembroke Pines?

7/12/2022 (Permalink)

An automatic sprinkler system is watering the lawn. We restore water damage “Like it never even happened” in Broward County.

Do you know how to tell if your sprinkler system is leaking? Our Pembroke Pines and West Miramar team responds to water damage emergencies each year in Pembroke Pines. Leaking sprinkler systems can cause water intrusion and damage to your home’s foundation. Here are some tips for determining if your sprinkler system is leaking.

  • Find your main sprinkler system valve and shut it off
  • Once you shut off the sprinkler system valve, look at the low flow indicator on your water meter. If it keeps moving, the water leak is inside your home.
  • If the low flow indicator stops moving, the leak is in your main sprinkler system pipe
  • To check for visible irrigation system leaks, turn off your sprinkler system valve and wait at least two minutes. This allows the main sprinkler system pipe to refill with water.
  • Go to your controller and turn on the zone. Go to the zone you turned on and listen for water running.
  • Do you see water bubbling up from the ground? Are there any wet spots or pooling of water?
  • Look for broken sprinkler heads in the zone. If water is not hitting the target area or flowing out of the sprinkler heads, you will need to replace the sprinkler heads.
  • Repeat this process for each zone in your irrigation system
  • Call a certified irrigation contractor if you can’t fix the problem by replacing the sprinkler heads

Faster to Any Size Disaster in Miramar?

A SERVPRO® of Pembroke Pines/West Miramar service van sits outside a home. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Broward County.

SERVPRO® of Pembroke Pines/West Miramar has been restoring water damage in Miramar for years. Here are some tips for professional maintenance for your water heater:

Use a qualified service professional for the following:

  • Burners should be cleaned once a year for gas- and oil-fired water heaters. Have the service professional inspect flues and vents for cracks or loose connections that could leak deadly exhaust gases.

  • Have a qualified plumber replace your anode rod once every two to five years

  • The service life of a temperature and pressure (T & P) valve is usually three years. Even if a T & P valve looks fine from the outside, manufacturers recommend they be removed and visually inspected for accumulations of corrosion deposits
  • Call a qualified plumber if your water tank is leaking.
  • If the T & P valve is discharging water or steam, the ONLY safe intervention is to remove the heat source by cutting off its fuel, if you can. For an electric heater, trip the circuit breaker; for a gas heater, shut off the gas.
  • If your water heater overheats, call a qualified plumber and allow the water heater to cool naturally. Never try to relieve the pressure yourself. Never add cool water to the tank, and never try to cool it by spraying it with a hose.

Rain Gutter Disaster in Miramar?

8/3/2021 (Permalink)

A clogged rain gutter is shown. We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration services in Broward County.

Water Damage Happens in Miramar

Rain gutters are a wonderful feature to have. When working correctly, rain gutters can help prevent water intrusion and water damage to your home. SERVPRO® of Pembroke Pines/West Miramar offers these tips from home expert Bob Villa on how to determine if your rain gutters are damaged:

Inspect your rain gutters for visible signs of cracking. Use some binoculars to inspect for smaller cracks.

Hidden Water Damage in Pembroke Pines?

A woman is holding a crumpled water bill in her hand. We mitigate water damage in Miramar and Pembroke Pines.

Water Bill Too High?

SERVPRO® of Pembroke Pines/West Miramar responds to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in the Pembroke Pines and Miramar areas. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average American uses around 88 gallons of water per person in the household. A family of four would typically use about 10,500 gallons of water per month. One way to determine if you have hidden water damage is to examine your water bill during the winter months. Here are some tips for detecting a hidden water leak from the EPA:

  • For a family of four, if your winter water use is more than 12,000 gallons per month, you probably have a water leak.
  • Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak.
  • To check for toilet leaks, place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl within ten minutes without flushing, you have a leak. (Flush immediately after this experiment to avoid staining the tank.)

Ask The Experts: What Specialized Equipment Does SERVPRO Bring To The Table?

1/6/2021 (Permalink)

When you live in Hollywood, you are always wary of the damage a storm can cause.  As you hear of friends having roof leaks and faulty windows, you thank your lucky stars that your house is intact. However, it's only a matter of time before your home becomes the victim of water damage. Whether you live in a home or a condo, aging pipes can be your downfall.  Their malfunction allows water to leak all over your floors and soak rugs, furniture, and décor.

Knowing whom to call when there is water damage to your Hollywood home is the best starting point when disaster strikes. SERVPRO is here to assist our community in eliminating traces of water while protecting your belongings. Our goal, other than restoring your home to mint condition, is to minimize the losses and disruption caused by a burst pipe. Just call our 24/7 line as soon as you discover the damage, regardless of its size. Big or small, our professionals have the tools and training to address your specific needs.

Essential to our success is the use of equipment built for water extraction. It is not sufficient to rent a wet/dry vacuum in your local home improvement store to get the job done. Our SERVPRO water restoration technicians (WRTs) use infrared technology to find water accumulation, even inside your wall cavities and under flooring material. Based on the moisture readings, we implement techniques such as injectidry and drying mats to restore proper humidity levels. The use of specialized equipment protects your home in several ways. It allows us to detect water without having to poke halls in your walls to get a reading. Our probes also allow us to access hard to reach places, such as floorboards or high ceilings. Most importantly, we can curtail the time spent to getting moisture readings, which in turn reduces the time your home and belongings are exposed to standing water.

Even when your water event seems small, SERVPRO of East Pembroke Pines is the key to restoring your home efficiently. Just call us at (954) 998-0600, so we may help leave your home, “Like it never even happened.”

Ask The Experts: What are some of the most common sources of water damage in a home?

1/6/2021 (Permalink)

When Mother Nature has a bad day in Pembroke Pines, FL, sometimes you do too. Many different natural disasters can lead to flooding inside your home. Unfortunately, even on a sunny day, you can experience a pipe burst or water line break that causes the same result. Be aware of three common causes of residential water damage and what to do if it happens to you.

1. Natural Disasters

Torrential downpours are not the only event in nature that can cause flooding in your house. Hurricanes, snowstorms, ice or hailstorms can be sources of water damage, and even fires can be a potential threat due to firefighting efforts. In any of these emergency situations, consider your safety first. After you and your family are out of danger, contact storm damage and water restoration company that specializes in emergency services. From tarping a roof to prevent further damage to removing the excess floodwaters, professionals can walk you through the steps needed to return your home to preloss condition.

2. Broken Pipe or Line Break

When a pipe burst or a water line break occurs, your house can become flooded with clean, uncontaminated water. In this situation, take action immediately to reduce the risk of secondary water damage. A water restoration specialist can inspect the damage and remove the standing water, and they can also dry, dehumidify, and restore your home and its contents.

3. Sewage Backup

sewer backup is an emergency situation due to the level of contamination in sewage. Immediately leave your home and do not touch the contaminated water. Specialists typically arrive within a few hours with the appropriate equipment to safely remove the water and debris. Your home and possessions will be dried, sanitized, and restored.

Whether the cause is from nature or a man-made source, flooding at your home in Pembroke Pines, should be addressed promptly. When a rainstorm or pipe burst ruins your day, take action by calling in professional water restoration experts. Also, check with your homeowners' insurance agent to see if water damage is covered under your policy.

There was a bubble of water in the drywall by the baseboard, and I knew I was in trouble. An old poem has the line, “water, water, everywhere”. When you need to say this in your home or office, you know there is trouble. You may be looking at water damage. There are several different possible causes of water damage in Pembroke Pines/West Miramar.

Causes can include:

  • Leaky dishwashers or washing machines
  • Clogged pipes
  • Leaking roofs

The amount of water damage depends on the amount of water and on the cause of the damage.

It is also important to start the cleanup as soon as possible. The longer your home or business is water-logged, the more damage.

Categories of Water Damage in Pembroke Pines/West Miramar:

  1. Clean water. It might come from an overflowing sink or a broken appliance. The water does not pose a threat to people. Keep in mind that any water will become contaminated after it stops flowing.
  2. Gray water. This water is contaminated from the get-go. It comes from broken toilets or sump pumps. It might not look dirty, or it might be brown.

When your appliances and roof are new, you breathe a little easier knowing it is unlikely that your savings will go to replace them. However, this does not mean that you are guaranteed an accident-free life. It is not uncommon for a leak to happen once all units in your complex are occupied, or a small roof leak to create trouble inside your townhome.

For big or small water damage to your new unit in Pembroke Pines, SERVPRO is here ready to help. Our team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to your emergency, and we do so by sending our certified technicians to assess the damage to your property quickly. When water is behind the damage to your home, our SERVPRO crew works to remove the extra humidity as soon as possible. Standing water and excess moisture both work to saturate the structure of your home and can be breeding grounds for mold and bacteria, so time is of the essence. Our hygrometers let us monitor the moisture in the air as we use dehumidifiers and extractors to remove excess humidity. Throughout the process, we document our observations, which may come in helpful when filing a claim with your insurance carrier.

Even when your home is brand new, SERVPRO of East Pembroke Pines is here to help you protect it. Our team knows how to deal with water emergencies of all sizes as we mitigate your losses. Call us at (954) 998-0600 and let us leave your home "Like it never even happened."

Our Specialists Can Save Your Pembroke Pines Home After A Water Damage Disaster

3/21/2019 (Permalink)

Rely on the professionalism of SERVPRO of East Pembroke Pines when cleanup of any category water is necessary.

Water Cleanup In Pembroke Pines By The Numbers

A water emergency in your Pembroke Pines home receives several types of evaluation when our remediation team arrives. We inspect the scene to determine the extent of the water migration to ensure we locate and remove all moisture, including hidden puddles and ponding behind, above, and beneath structural components. Allowing any water to linger invites progressive structural damage and secondary issues such as mold growth.

An equally important aspect of water cleanup in Pembroke Pines is the evaluation of the water quality. Restoration professionals assign the water invading your home a category from 1 to 3. Freshwater flowing from things like supply line breaks or tub overflows is labeled Category 1. This water exposes you and your family to little risk, and it usually can be pumped or extracted into the sanitary system or even to the ground surrounding a home.

Water pouring from broken dishwashers and washing machines, sink drains, and urine-only toilet overflow is labeled Category 2 or gray water. This type of water contains a level of contaminants that can cause illness or discomfort if ingested. SERVPRO follows appropriate rules when containing and discarding this type of water. Sanitary system disposal might be indicated, but discharging onto a yard or street is not recommended.

Highly contaminated water from sewage and toilet backflows from beyond the trap SERVPRO terms Category 3 or black water. Other examples of this type of fluid are seawater or overland flooding and wind-driven rain from hurricanes or lesser storms. Because no definitive answer is possible when water comes from these sources all are considered hazardous, possibly exposing your family and home to blood and fecal-borne pathogens, vermin, and chemicals, among other dangers.

SERVPRO professionals contain Category 3 or black water carefully, protecting themselves and unaffected areas of your property by wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) during the water cleanup. The liquids and contaminants are contained and disposed of according to local hazardous waste protocols.

The speed of cleanup is vital for all categories of water. Category 1 “fresh” water transforms rapidly to gray and then black water, categories 2 and 3, if left unattended for days or even hours. SERVPRO’s capacity to respond fast and complete cleanup by sanitization with EPA-registered disinfection makes our services essential to your home’s restoration and your peace of mind.

Rely on the professionalism of SERVPRO of East Pembroke Pines when cleanup of any category water is necessary. Call us at (954) 998-0600 for fast, expert mitigation of any water emergency.

Our Team Will Put The Right Plan Of Action Into Your Pembroke Pines Water Restoration

2/8/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage caused this wall to become damp and needed restoration. Our team is ready to help with a sense of urgency.

Water Cleanup Crews In Pembroke Pines Describe Final Cleaning Procedures

If excessive moisture finds its way into your Pembroke Pines house, several issues can quickly result. If problems like these do not get treated promptly by a professional water cleanup company such as SERVPRO, the damage can get worse as time goes on. The longer materials stay wet, the more likely the moisture can ruin the item's structural integrity. If organic substances like paper or wood stay wet for more than 48 hours, there is a chance that mold can form. However, if water cleanup gets conducted immediately after it spills into your building, our technicians can minimize the chances of fungal contamination and save many of your wet building materials and contents from getting discarded and counted as a loss.

The first step to removing moisture is to extract it while it is still in the liquid form. Once water soaks into materials and evaporates into the air, our SERVPRO technicians then use other specialized methods and pieces of equipment to complete your water cleanup in Pembroke Pines. When drying out wet contents and building materials inside your dwelling, we utilize air movers to create airflow that pushes wet air away from affected surfaces so that water can evaporate from them. The moisture that is then put into the atmosphere gets removed by dehumidifiers that dispense it in liquid form and serve as a source of warm, dry air for the fans to use in the airflow movements.

After moisture levels return to what they were before the loss occurred and we put everything back, we complete a final cleaning process. The final cleaning includes a thorough cleaning of any affected carpets as well as a wipe down of surfaces in the area that got wet. We also can spray the affected region with antimicrobial chemicals to help prevent future mold growth. During the final clean we also take measure to deodorize any mildew-like aromas.

If you ever need help with water clean up out of your house, call SERVPRO of East Pembroke Pines at (954) 998-0600 24/7.

Can Pipe Breaks Cause A Lot of Water Damage? Yes, It Can!

11/9/2018 (Permalink)

Regularly check the pipes in your home to make sure they are working properly to prevent water damage.

Technicians In Pembroke Pines Describe The Water Cleanup Process

If a water pipe breaks inside your Pembroke Pines house, it is essential to get the moisture removed quickly. Any time something gets wet, professional water cleanup from a company like SERVPRO is necessary. If materials inside your home stay wet for too long more issues such as secondary damage can take place. Secondary damage can occur when humidity levels rise or if mold forms due to materials staying wet for too long. Thorough water cleanup after a leak can help reduce the chance of a fungus growing.

The first steps to any mitigation project are to stop the leak from its source and to make sure the affected area is safe for occupants. Next, our SERVPRO technicians begin the water cleanup in your Pembroke Pines home with the removal process. Once a pipe breaks, the moisture always follows gravity and tends to settle on the floors. Since water can ruin flooring materials, it is important to remove it from carpet and hardwood floors quickly.

If the water is deep, our SERVPRO team can use a sump pump to pull up the water and put it into a sewer drain. After any standing water is removed, we use a truck mounted pump to remove water from flooring materials. For smaller jobs, we sometimes use wet vacs with special wands along with mops and buckets.

After we remove as much water as we can, we begin the drying process. To dry out building materials as quickly as possible, we set up a combination of air movers and dehumidifiers. Air movers circulate air to enhance evaporation from affected surfaces like furniture, walls, and fabrics. The dehumidifiers capture the airborne water molecules and condense them into a holding pan, thereby decreasing the dampness in the structure.

Locally Owned Company with National Resources

After we set up the equipment, we return to your home each day and check the progress. We use moisture meters to discover where the water may be hidden and adjust the equipment as necessary. As the last step, we do a final walk-through with the customer to verify a standard moisture level in building elements and a normal RH. If you ever have a water leak at your house, call SERVPRO of East Pembroke Pines at (954) 998-0600 seven days a week.

Locally Owned Company with National Resources
