Water Bill Too High?
SERVPRO® of Pembroke Pines/West Miramar responds to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in the Pembroke Pines and Miramar areas. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average American uses around 88 gallons of water per person in the household. A family of four would typically use about 10,500 gallons of water per month. One way to determine if you have hidden water damage is to examine your water bill during the winter months. Here are some tips for detecting a hidden water leak from the EPA:
- For a family of four, if your winter water use is more than 12,000 gallons per month, you probably have a water leak.
- Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak.
- To check for toilet leaks, place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl within ten minutes without flushing, you have a leak. (Flush immediately after this experiment to avoid staining the tank.)
