September is designated as National Preparedness Month by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The month is filled with awareness campaigns, educational workshops, emergency drills, and exercises simulating different disaster scenarios to better prepare individuals, families, and communities for emergencies and disasters. This year’s theme focuses on older adult populations, and ensuring they have resources and support systems in place to overcome the challenges many older adults experience during and after a disaster occurs.

The American Red Cross identifies several factors that make older adults more vulnerable after disasters, including, but not limited to:

• A greater likelihood to suffer from chronic conditions and the need for associated medications
• A greater reliance on assistive devices such as walkers or glasses, as well as support from caregivers and others
•  An increased likelihood of social isolation
