How Can I Avoid a Cooking Fire in my Pembroke Pines Home?

Our Pembroke Pines and West Miramar team responds to fire damage emergencies every year in Pembroke Pines. Earlier this month, the City of Pembroke Pines Fire Department held Fire Prevention Week. The theme was “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking is the country’s leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Almost half of the reported home fires start in the kitchen, and two-thirds of home cooking fires start with the ignition of food or other cooking materials. Due to COVID-19, people are cooking at home more than ever before.
Here are some cooking safety tips from the NFPA:
- Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the stove or stovetop.
- Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for a short time, turn off the stove.
- If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking
- Keep anything that can catch fire (oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains) away from your stovetop
