If you love the look of snow in winter but aren't a fan of the frigid temps that come with it, a space heater may be the exact solution for you! However, along with the warmth comes a list of possible disasters waiting to happen. Most fires from space heaters happen as a result of a heater being left too close to a flammable object, but there are other potential issues too that should also be considered.
When it comes to the flammable item issue, ALWAYS avoid placing your space heater next to:
- Upholstered furniture
- Curtains
- Gas cans
- Paint
- Bedding
- Matches
There are several other steps you can take to avoid a space heater fire in your home. You should check for certain safety features before purchasing a heater. Once you do choose a heater, you should also make sure it is used properly.
Safety Features
What safety features are important "must-haves" for your home? A long cord is important. Why? Extension cords/power strips are not a good idea for a space heater and can lead to a higher chance of potential issues.
Also, if you have pets or kids, an auto shut off feature is a "must-have". This shuts the heater off automatically if your heater should get knocked over. This could prevent the unthinkable should an accident happen. Even if you don't have pets or kids, you might want to consider this option as well as it also shuts off your heater should it overheat.
Proper Use
After you take your space heater home, make sure to place it level and on a hard, non-flammable surface, at least 3 feet away from any flammable item. Also, keep your kids safe by keeping it away from them! If the cord looks frayed at any point, it is time to invest in a new one, so check the cord often!
